Elite Universities With Low Acceptance Rates

If you have your heart set on getting into a top tier university, then here are the universities with the lowest acceptance rates. These are universities that are more exclusive than most and accept only students who have scored high enough on their SAT’s, GPA and have great essays/personalities.

Harvard:

Ten of the top fifteen universities in the world are American. Harvard is regarded as a first choice. It has an acceptance rate of 5%, but not many admit without being in the Top 3%. Because it is such a prestigious university, it takes a lot of hard work to get into Harvard, and both grades and standardized tests play an important role. If you want your children to get into the Ivy League, then send them to study at a high school that provides an elite education. 

Stanford:

Stanford University is next on our list with a selectivity of 5%. Stanford, located in California is known for its cutting-edge research that goes on at its renowned medical school and at its Silicon Valley campus. You will have to have an excellent SAT score to get into Stanford.

MIT:

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has a selectivity of 7%. It has produced five Nobel Prize winners, one US president, and the founder of Intel. MIT is first and foremost known for its excellent engineering program. Prospective students have a good chance of getting accepted into MIT if they can prove that they are talented in math, science or computer programming. Test scores are also important to get you into this university.

Yale:

Yale University is the next university on our list with a low acceptance rate of 7%. Yale was founded as a college in 1701, but did not admit its first female students until 1969, and women were not allowed to graduate until 1972. It is known for its high-quality liberal arts education, and it is often ranked as one of the best universities in the nation.

Harvey Mudd College:

Harvey Mudd College is another great university with a low acceptance rate of 18%. This private liberal arts college is based in Claremont and San Diego, California. It has been ranked as one of the top 50 public liberal arts colleges in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report for years now, and it’s been named one of “America’s Best Colleges” by Forbes Magazine for nine consecutive years. If you have a high school that provides an excellent education then you can gain admission into Harvey Mudd College because your academic performance will play a vital role in getting into this elite university.

Northwestern University:

Northwestern University has an acceptance rate of 9%. It is a private research university located in Evanston, Illinois and it is recognized as one of the leading universities in the nation. Northwestern’s sports teams are known as the Wildcats, and they compete in the Big Ten Conference. The university was founded in 1851. If you want your child to attend Northwestern then you will have to make sure that they do very well both in high school and on their SAT’s.

Columbia University:

Columbia University comes in with a selectivity of 7%. It is the oldest university in the state of New York, and it was founded in 1754. Columbia is known for its highly ranked business school, law school and undergraduate arts programs. It also has a wide array of graduate schools that include an engineering school and a school of professional studies.

Johns Hopkins University:

Next on our list is Johns Hopkins University with an acceptance rate of 11%. It is a private research university located in Baltimore, Maryland that was founded in 1876. Johns Hopkins has many distinguished alumni, including 36 Nobel laureates and several Pulitzer Prize winners. In order to get into Johns Hopkins University you will need to show that you have exceptional grades, and a lot of extracurricular activities.

University of Pennsylvania:

The University of Pennsylvania has an acceptance rate of 9%. It is a private research university that was founded in 1740. Penn is respected as one of the most prestigious universities in the nation, and it has produced nine Nobel Prize winners. It is also known for its highly ranked Wharton School of Business and its School of Engineering & Applied Science. If you want your child to attend Penn then they will have to achieve a high score on their SAT’s, as well as perform excellently in high school.
